relief, karen gilbert & paul pavlak
I had intended to update my shop this week, among many other things I need to attend to, but I’ve been fighting a nasty virus for over a week. Today I am relieved to say I’m finally starting to feel better. So look for an update next week -I’ll post a date soon.
I wanted to share with you some new work done by my friends Karen and Paul. They cast the negative space from the packaging of various common objects and then assembled the new objects together as wall reliefs.

I really like the two readings of the pieces -from afar there is an interesting textural relationship between them all, and you sense something familiar about the objects, but don’t quite know what they are. Up close you see common objects made uncommon in a new material and you also see the detail, texture and imperfection of that material. I wish I could go to the show to see the work up close and in person.
The show will be up through October 7th in San Francisco. You can see more images and read all the details about the show here.

fold jacket, UNIFORM Studio, Fall 2007
Lately all I have been working on is trying to catch up. The above jacket is a long overdue special order. Next up are more special orders. School started last week, both for my son and also at the University where I teach an architecture studio. Most of my time in the past few weeks has been spent writing curriculum and preparing assignments. I am looking forward to getting back into a regular rhythm of working/teaching/making. I love summer (as I love each season), but I am much calmer when I have a routine schedule.
In the spirit of intertwining, I have been incorporating some of my ideas about subtraction into my studio. I am teaching the 3rd studio this semester which focuses on material and structure. My students will be following a process of subtraction to reveal the essence and beauty of material and structure and the relationships between the two. Two questions we’ve been debating are what can be gained by taking away? and can you subtract by adding?
The lace fence project by Demakersvan is a precedent we’ve been looking at as it seems to incorporate a lot of the ideas we’re discussing. And it’s beautiful.
Also -thank you for all of your well wishes about the small magazine spread! I can’t say enough positive things about small. I think it’s fantastic.
